When it comes to laundry and other household cleaning products, we all want products that are effective and safe for our families. I’ve learned so much about toxins and chemicals over the years and I have been really intentional about eliminating harmful products from my home. When I came across Truly Free laundry detergent, I thought it was too good to be true. I hadn’t used scented laundry detergent or fabric softener in YEARS and I couldn’t find many reviews of Truly Free laundry detergent to let me know if it was truly as great as it sounded.

As someone who suffered from eczema for nearly a decade before cleaning up my diet, household products, soaps, lotions, and overall toxin load, I can assure you I have some of the most sensitive skin around and I am always cautious about trying “toxin free” or “plant-based” products. I have been duped one too many times and ended up with a rash and money down the drain.
So after many years of using “clear and free,” boring, unscented detergents that did a mediocre job of cleaning my clothes, I finally took the leap and gave Truly Free laundry detergent a try.
What is Truly Free?
Truly Free is a brand that’s gaining popularity for its non-toxic and eco-friendly promise. Truly Free offers laundry detergent, but also tons more household products that boast being cleaner, less toxic, and just as effective as their competitors. In this honest review, I’ll share my personal experience with Truly Free Laundry Detergent, Fabric Softener, Dish Soap, and Dishwasher Detergent today, covering everything from its performance to its ingredients, and whether it lives up to the hype. I definitely plan to update as I spend more time using other products and feel like I can give a fair review of their effectiveness.

Truly Free Laundry Detergent
Assembly: Truly Free’s laundry detergent comes in concentrated packets and you will receive an empty jug with your first order. You simply pour the concentrated liquid into the provided bottle and add water. This takes a matter of seconds and allows you to reuse your jug (subsequent orders from their site allow you to just order refill packets so you aren’t constantly throwing away plastic jugs).
Smell: The detergent has a deliciously clean smell. It’s subtle, and not overwhelming like most fake detergents full of chemicals. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved the smell! It’s not overpowering, which is a plus for those sensitive to strong fragrances (me).
Cleaning Power: Despite being free of harmful chemicals, Truly Free detergent effectively cleans clothes. It tackles stains well and leaves fabrics feeling fresh and clean. While it might not be as aggressive as some conventional detergents, it’s certainly capable of handling most everyday laundry needs. I have found that my laundry has a subtly clean smell when I fold it, something I have missed since switching to unscented detergents years ago.
Ingredients and Safety: One of the biggest selling points of Truly Free laundry detergent is its commitment to using non-toxic and hypoallergenic ingredients. The detergent is free of dyes, perfumes, and harsh chemicals often found in traditional laundry products. This makes it a safer choice for people with sensitive skin or allergies like myself and my family.
Overall Rating: Truly Free laundry detergent offers a great balance of cleaning power and chemical safety. I feel great about using it on my entire family’s clothes and there’s nothing better than laying down in my freshly made bed after my sheets and blankets have been washed with Truly Free detergent. It gets 5/5 stars ⭐️ from me.
Truly Free Fabric Softener
Assembly: Like the laundry detergent, Truly Free’s softening rinse comes in a concentrated form. You simply pour the concentrated liquid into the provided bottle and add water. You can order refill packets when you run out so you can cut down on wasting old plastic containers. Win win!
Smell: The softening rinse has a light, fresh floral scent. It’s not overpowering and leaves clothes smelling fresh and clean without being overly fragrant. I am picky about smells and I adore this scent! It gives me Snuggle vibes if I am being honest, without the toxins, of course!
Softening Power: The softening rinse leaves your laundry feeling soft and comfortable. It helps to reduce static cling and makes your clothes smell amazing!
Ingredients and Safety: Similar to the detergent, Truly Free’s softening rinse is made with non-toxic and hypoallergenic ingredients. It’s free of dyes, perfumes, and harsh chemicals often found in traditional fabric softeners. This makes it a safer choice for people with sensitive skin or allergies.
Overall: Truly Free’s softening rinse offers a gentle and effective way to soften fabrics and adds a boost of fresh scented goodness to your laundry. It gets 5/5 stars ⭐️ from me! It’s a great alternative to traditional fabric softeners that can be harsh on the skin and the environment. If you’re looking for a natural and safe way to keep your clothes soft and fresh, Truly Free’s softening rinse is a great option.
Truly Free Dish Soap
Assembly: I bet you could guess by now, but Truly Free’s dish soap also comes in a concentrated form with an empty bottle. You simply pour the soap concentrate into the provided bottle and add water. You can order refill packets when you run out.
Smell: The dish soap has a light, sweet basil scent. I was not sure I’d like this smell but it’s subtle enough that it just smells slightly fresh, which I enjoy.
Cleaning Power: This soap bubbles up and cleans just as well as the other soaps I’m used to! A common question is “does it get sudsy” and the answer is definitely YES. If you want to see the soap in action, you can watch my review video here.
Ingredients and Safety: Just like their other products, Truly Free’s dish soap made with non-toxic and hypoallergenic ingredients. It’s free of dyes, perfumes, and harsh chemicals often found in traditional scented soaps. This is important to me since I am prone to eczema breakouts on my hands and have to be so careful about which soaps I use when washing dishes.
Overall: Truly Free’s dish soap gets 5/5 ⭐️stars from me and will continue to be a product I buy on a regular basis. I’ve had zero eczema breakouts since using it and plan to keep it in my regular household product rotation!
Truly Free Dishwasher Detergent
Assembly: Not to throw you off, but Truly Free’s dishwasher detergent actually does NOT come concentrated. It comes as a powdered detergent in a resealable bag with a scoop.
Smell: There really isn’t much of a smell to their dishwasher detergent. It just kind of smells fresh and clean, if that makes sense.
Cleaning Power: So this is one I was really worried about using. I rely a lot on my dishwasher to get my dishes clean and hate having soap spots of dirty spots leftover on dishes when I go to put them away. Let me be the first to tell you, my dishes are as clean as they’ve ever been (and cleaner than some of the other lower toxin brands I have tried. If you want to see what my dishes look like after using this, you can watch my review video here.
Ingredients and Safety: Just like their other products, Truly Free’s dishwashing detergent is made with non-toxic and safe ingredients. It’s free of dyes, perfumes, and harsh chemicals often found in traditional dish detergents. Check out their full ingredients list here.
Overall: Truly Free’s dishwasher detergent gets 5/5 ⭐️stars from me and I love that I no longer have to buy toxic detergent just to get clean dishes!
